WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

Spring was somewhat later than average, and rather cold. Tundra was 80% snowfree by 20 June. On 12-13 July strong wind and rain cause flooding of lowlands and even flat upland tundra.

Date of 50% snow-cover:

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes had average density. Snowy Owls did not breed, buzzards tried, but failed. Among Skuas only Arctic bred, but fewer pairs than usial. Less abundant were Litlle Stints, Temmink's Stints, Grey Plovers, did not nest Curlew Sandpipers. Nest success was low due to predation by Foxes, while many chicks died from rain. Almost no fledgings remained in late July - early August.

Rodent dynamics:

Lemmings were scarce, as depression continued from 1994.
